The Santosh Trophy, an inter-state football tournament in India, was inaugurated in 1941, making it one of the oldest football tournaments in the country. Modern Santosh trophy
Later Santosh Trophy also called as National Football Championship because of sponsorship ties with Hero MotoCorp.
It played as a state-level national football tournament, in which state associations and government institutions are participating under the All India Football Federation (AIFF), a football governing body in India.
Before the beginning of the national club league, which started in the time period of 1996, the Santosh Trophy was dominating as the top-level tournament in India. Many football players who have represented India internationally, played the tournament and gained honor while playing in the Santosh Trophy.
The tournament is conducted every year with eligible teams who are divided into zones, firstly played in the qualifying round and then progress into the tournament proper. The current champions of the Tournament are Karnataka, who won their title after 54 years during 2022–23.
This was the first major achievement for Karnataka, which had previously won four times as the princely state of Mysore, after 1968-69.
